Administrative Hearing and Medical Interpreter Program
The State Personnel Board (SPB) maintains the list of administrative hearing and medical interpreters and oversees the Interpreter Program. Per Government Code Section 11435.05 – 65, interpreters used in State administrative hearing and medical proceedings must be certified, such as via examination.
If you are interested in obtaining certification to interpret at State proceedings, you are encouraged to take the court interpreter examination. As a certified court interpreter, you may interpret in administrative and medical proceedings for State departments. To learn about the court interpreter examination please visit www.courtinfo.ca.gov. Certified court interpreters may request that their names be placed on the State master list of interpreters by contacting the SPB Interpreter Program (see below).
The annual renewal period for certified administrative hearing and medical interpreters is May 1 through June 30, for the following fiscal year. If you were certified in the past but have not submitted your certification renewal application, please do so as soon as possible by contacting the SPB Interpreter Program at (916) 653-7325 (voice), via California Relay Service at 7-1-1, or via e-mail at interpreter@spb.ca.gov.
